Let's listen to the opinions of others for peace --August 24, 2008
There is absolutely no reason why we cannot rise above the divisive crises that confront our contemporary world. Dialogue is the surest path to peace. And it is a path open to all of us, starting from wherever we are, starting now. Dialogue is an adventure, a means of discovering the uniqueness, mystery, and familiarity of humanity. It is the wellspring of ceaseless and unimpeded value creation. Read more>>

NUCLEAR WEAPON FREE ZONE - Say no to nukes in the Arctic --Jan. 31, 2008
During the Cold War, the Arctic Ocean was an important route for the nuclear-powered submarines of the Eastern and Western blocs, which traveled under the icecap carrying their ominous loads of ballistic missiles. If a new phase of military competition were sparked in the region, this would greatly compound the tragic impact of global warming. We must act now to avoid this at all costs. Read more>>

2008 Peace Proposal - Humanizing Religion, Creating Peace (Summary)
Almost twenty years have passed since the end of the Cold War, almost ten since the start of the new century, and still the contours of a new and different way of organizing the world have yet to take shape. While the processes of globalization possess a seemingly unstoppable momentum, this can hardly be considered a global order. Rather, the effort to contain through the application of force the many highly explosive situations around the world has met with limited success at best. The situation could perhaps be characterized as one of global disorder. Read more>>

A HUMAN REVOLUTION - Transforming our way of living --April 12, 2007
This year, the Doomsday Clock devised by the Chicago-based Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists was advanced two minutes, for the first time in five years. It now stands at 11:55 p.m., just five minutes away from the "midnight" of human annihilation. This change not only reflects last year's nuclear test by North Korea and uncertainties regarding Iran's nuclear development goals; it is also a reflection of the impact of environmental degradation and climate change. Realizing the potential of an aging society --March 8, 2007
The aging of society is not, of course, something affecting only Japan. According to the United Nations, the global population of people over 60 -- today estimated at 600 million -- will approach 2 billion by the year 2050. But the heart of this issue is not in the numbers. The problems of aging present an opportunity to rethink our social and personal lives in order to ensure the dignity and welfare of each individual. Bullying reflects problems in adult society --February 8, 2007
Bullying is not a sickness unique to Japan. But the kinds of extreme bullying that can lead even to suicide have as their background the closed and insular nature of Japanese society. Read more>>

Peace Proposal 2007 - Restoring the Human Connection: The First Step to Global Peace --January 26, 2007
The year 2007 marks fifty years since the second president of the Soka Gakkai, Josei Toda, made an historic declaration condemning nuclear weapons as "an absolute evil" and calling for their prohibition, stating he wished to rip out the claws that are hidden in their very depths. Read more>>

Moving beyond the use of military force --January 11, 2007
"We continue to emphasize our differences instead of what we have in common. We continue to talk about 'us' versus 'them.' Only when we can start to talk about 'us' as including all of humanity will we truly be at peace . . ." Read more>>

Fulfilling the Mission: Empowering the UN to live up to the world's expectations --August 30, 2006
With a membership of 192 states, the UN is the most universal forum available; the UN alone is capable of promoting international cooperation and conferring legitimacy to such efforts and actions. Therefore, I believe that there is no other realistic solution than to provide effective support to the UN and work for its revitalization. We must start from the recognition that the UN has, for sixty years, provided humanitarian assistance to regions in need and acted as a forum for global dialogue where international consensus could be reached on issues of importance. The University of the 21st Century--Cradle of World Citizens --May 22, 2005
When I think of you earnestly pursuing your studies far from home, I am reminded of Dr. Wangari Maathai of Kenya, whom I met in Tokyo this past February and who also devoted her youth to study and learning. As you know, she is an environmental activist and a recipient of last year's Nobel Peace Prize. Read more>>

Daisaku Ikeda is the president of the Soka Gakkai International (SGI), a Buddhist association of more than 12 million members in 191 countries and territories, and founder of several educational, cultural and research institutions. He is a prolific writer, poet and peace activist, recognized as one of the leading interpreters of Buddhism, bringing its timeless wisdom to bear on the many contemporary issues confronting humanity.

Central to Ikeda's thinking is the idea that a self-directed transformation within the life of each individual, rather than societal or structural reforms alone, holds the key to lasting peace and human happiness. This is expressed most succinctly in a passage in his best-known work, The Human Revolution: "A great inner revolution in just a single individual will help achieve a change in the destiny of a nation and, further, will cause a change in the destiny of humankind."

Ikeda's leadership has made him the recipient of numerous honorary doctorates and awards including the United Nations Peace Award, the International Tolerance Award of the Simon Wiesenthal Center and the Rosa Parks Humanitarian Award.
